Pre-Matriculation Course

New medical student studies in the student lounge of the School of Medicine.

The SOM pre-matriculation program introduces learning skills and course content for first-year medical students at the University of Mississippi School of Medicine. The SOM Admissions Office identifies students most likely to benefit from the program, and the program is also designed to help create a supportive community for new students in a low-stress environment while introducing a rigorous curriculum.

The program spans six weeks. The first portion is delivered online for two weeks, and the second portion is on campus for four weeks. For those first two weeks, it is designed to have students conduct a personal self-assessment of their own learning skills and foundational knowledge in anatomy, biochemistry, and histology. Based on information from these assessments, the more in-depth content is delivered in the following four weeks.

Beyond traditional academic coursework, students meet weekly with the School of Medicine’s Academic Counselor, participate in clinical correlations, small groups, and wellness events. In addition, teaching assistants, current second year students, provide students with review sessions and serve as student mentors.
